I created these works by using a scanner and computer to capture images of delicate fabric. The resulting shapes and forms are mostly produced by chance—since I cannot see them ahead of time with the scanner’s “eye”—but I do take care to select the scans that I feel invite viewers to look closer and navigate the space. These works are installed online only, such that each piece can be seen small and apparently simple in its entirety (as one file) and then, once clicked on, up close in seemingly infinite complexity and detail (a larger file size). The basic idea is that things are never so simple or beautiful as they may appear to be from afar, and that this is especially the case when they are experienced more intimately. By using fabrics and clothing types that must be handled with sensitivity, I wanted to draw attention to other entities and situations that are also quite fragile, but whose complexity and ambiguity we do not always pause to consider. I was thinking of particular social issues affecting Austin and Chicago when making these works, but don’t believe these issues are intrinsic.
